The Mess of Me

Back when I decided I wanted to blog in like what? 2012 or 2013? I was under what I now believe to be the VERY misguided delusion illusion of what I envisioned for my little nook of the internet. I thought my blog HAD to be this sort of cookie cutter, mommyhood, Christian wife, Pinterest-perfect, beauty of darling precious proportions!
My depressed, anxiety, OCD, often self-loathing, hyper self-critical, perfectionist, type A personality, couldn't fathom for even a nanosecond that anyone in their right mind would want to read about the REAL, mess of a human I really am; my struggles of daily mom life, my marital issues, and mental illness, the yucky, unpleasant me had to be hidden from the interweb masses at ALL costs!

Rejection, disappointments, poor choices, dark times, a marriage literally more often than not on the verge of divorce, a husband facing many battles of his own, financial strains, shame from my own past, a potty mouth, messed-up/dysfunctional extended families/relationships and estrangement, betrayals, loneliness, anxiety, depression---you name it, I or we (Kevin and I) have weathered it. I NEVER ONCE stopped to think that anyone could relate at all to all that muck!

I wasn't praying over my blog (or much of anything consistently) much less being GOD led! I was living in darkness and just kind of trying to "wing it" on my own. Talk about living in la la land! I truly believe there is a very fine line between what we wish our lives looked like, therefore what we portray sometimes AND the actual reality, the behind closed doors truth! I just couldn't bring myself to be transparent, authentic, or real for fear of rejection and nonacceptance. Humiliating embarrassment of Titanic proportions was the ONLY thing I could imagine! Sure, I knew that GOD could bring beauty for my ashes, turn all my mounting trials into my testimony but MY testimony is just downright UGLY! There was no way in you-know-where I would ever or thought I could ever shine the light via my cute, little blog! Wasn't gonna happen! Surrender???
Uh! No thanks, GOD! I absolutely DON'T wanna! Can we say baby toddler temper tantrum Christian, much??? I'm here to tell ya, OBEDIENCE can be so HARD! I for one, quite actually, frankly suck at it mostly!

You know what though? The nature of grief and or pain is inherently isolating. I ALWAYS feel like I am the ONLY one! But when I am in a season of great joy it's all good! You get my drift, right? I'm ALL happy, good things EVERYWHERE!! But when my heart is broken? ALL I CAN see is EVERYONE ELSE has EVERYTHING they need! It is so revealing and moving that GOD does some of HIS BEST work in and through us when we let others in on what feels so lonely and heavy! It is VITAL to share ALL of it! IMPORTANT to share our pain, joy, hurts, whatever it is going on in our lives because you NEVER know how it may affect or touch some other person that really needed to hear our story because it related to them. GOD is with us in the midst of EVERY aspect of our lives, but HE also ministers to us through people, books, Christian TV, blogs, social media, etc. as part of HIS body of believers or even nonbelievers to share with us and encourage us! So, therefore is OUR testimony very, very, very important?

Most of the time I think, "Oh! They won't or couldn't understand, receive, accept, etc. my heartache!" But I do all the time from others very easily! And with the healing I trust GOD for through wherever I go, whatever journey, whatever challenge, whatever valley, I hope in the LORD and I hope that I CAN help others find that same healing, redemption, grace, mercy, hope, comfort, and love from my LORD and SAVIOR. JESUS who came to give it to ALL of us. HE is the ONLY ONE who can give it adequately! Having faith doesn't mean it ALL goes away instantly but it does mean, "BOY! I HAVE a SHEPHERD who is ALWAYS looking for the one who is wandering!" JESUS wants us to know HE cares! To take us in HIS protective arms and presence!

You know what? I'm turning over a NEW leaf!
I WANT to be open and honest and talk about my challenges as a human being!
Shine the light!
Be comforting!
Love!
This IS what I AM called to do as a believer! That IS why I am here on this earth!

BUT I AM also the thirsty, hurting, hungry, lonely person that GOD wants to reach out and DO what no one else can, like the SHEPHERD that HE is, like HIS SON JESUS CHRIST and hold me close! I want an even deeper, closer relationship with GOD that not only HE knows my heart, because HE already does, but that I can get to know HIS heart!!

I have been going through a season where I NEED something!? For my life to feel MORE connected to GOD, and the people around me. My daily devotionals have almost stopped.
My kids get up early!
 Life is busy!
I get lazy!
 Am I content?
Am I at peace?
Do I feel joyful?
NOTHING is MORE important than that time, daily, quietly, alone with JESUS!
So why is that ALWAYS the FIRST thing in my life I sacrifice if I get overwhelmed or busy?
But you know what the the beautiful thing about it is?
I CAN begin again, each new day because of HIS forgiveness, grace, mercy, and love for me! I find that I can actually see what GOD is doing to and in my heart if I start my day centered with HIM, connected to HIS unconditional love, to HIS heart for me, there is a peace, a quality of life that stays with me throughout the whole rest of  my day, that I can't recapture if I forgo my morning prayer and Bible time and try instead to maybe occasionally squeeze some in at the end of my day at best but here lately not for weeks or more at a time!
THAT
is how I want to live EVERY day, with that sense of GOD connection--That HE created on purpose and for a purpose in me.

The refreshing thing is that there is NOTHING I HAVE to do to "EARN" more of or even any of HIS love! I can't even "ruin" HIS love for me! When I start there and ground myself in that place in my mind, I become VERY FREE!!! So throughout my day now, I am trying to connect with people, to serve, to minister, to laugh, to live again! Just get into the presence of GOD first thing every morning and remain there all day! I NEVER regret it when I do or go unchanged.

Through me and other women together we CAN show the love of CHRIST and let the world know that GOD loves us ALL extravagantly. Start again from scratch each new day. Be women who help other women by sharing our stories or trials and how we overcome along with the joys. Take our stories that bring the LORD glory to the lost and to those that are discontented, disconnected from HIM, share our desperation and what GOD has done in our lives!

Getting on and finally getting a grip on my depression, PTSD, and anxiety

So, the last three weeks or so have been a very dark time for me again. I've barely functioned or wanted to get out of bed. We have had a lot of stress lately. I don't cope well, obviously. But last Wednesday I bit
the bullet, put my pride aside and went to see my doctor. He rescribed me Celexa 20 MG
Here are links to a description and generalized informat on each medication:
He said it may take 2-3 weeks for my Celexa to begin working. The Xanax makes me very tired and lethargic so when I go back to see him in three weeks I think I will try something else for my anxiety. I've never taken any medication before and had hoped I would never never need to but I know I need something to help me function normally again.

I am also going the essential route, as well. I have a few I am diffusing and a few topical pre-dilluted roll-ons. They are Plant Therapy brand, which is the brand that the renowned, internally regarded aromatherapy expert Robert Tisserand developed the first ever essential oils that are safe for children.  Formulated by Robert Tisserand for children ages 2–10, KidSafe features a variety of synergies and single oils targeted toward specific issues and ailments common in this age range. All are available as 100% pure, undiluted essential oils as well as pre-diluted roll-ons.
I am diffusing this one:
I purchased these two pre-diluted roll-ons:

This is the link to their website. They offer a wide variety of excellent quality singles, organic, synergies. roll-ons, and their Kid Safe brand at very affordable prices, and free shipping too:
I am also taking several types of supplements. Ultimately I should eat a well balanced diet but I don't. Baby steps. So vitamins are a good option for me and seem to really be helping I can definitely tell when I miss a day. I take a women's muti-vitamin plus iron, Vitamin B-12,  Vitamin D, Fish Oil/Omega-3, Magnesium,
Here are a few good articles on natural remedies and supplements for depression and anxiety:

 And

I also plan to start taking a yoga class once or twice a week starting next week. I have done a few yoga videos at home and really enjoyed it and felt more calm and relaxed after!
Here is a link to the videos on YouTube I have tried:
And I really liked this one:

I have also been exploring the concepts of The Law of Attraction, The Secret, and meditation.  Google Loise Hay, Zig Ziggler, and Dr. Wayne Dyer.
Here are two Loise Hay videos:

Learning to smile again: Overcoming Depression and Anxiety

I've really been trying to educate myself and research anxiety, depression, and post traumatic stress within the last few months. My counselor is really helping me and has been a wealth of knowledge and resources. She has given me books to read, printouts of online articles, and worksheets. We have read over and discussed several together during our sessions. I see her weekly.
At our last session, she suggested keeping a mood journal. We have discussed before, that I do in fact journal, but my journal has been my and the kid's daily happenings and memorable moments, my devotional, prayer, and Bible study, a few other things scattered here or there all combined. I have never dedicated a journal specifically for my mental illness journey or recorded my feelings and moods.I've always found writing to be therapeutic
(hence why I blog lol)
so I really loved this suggestion!

Basically she suggested keeping a journal chronicling my illness, and that it will help me recover from depression, my anxiety, even my post traumatic stress and get in touch with my feelings. She also explained that it's an especially powerful tool to help me trace and monitor my trauma and feelings, that keeping a journal is proven to be an effective form of stress relief, as well. She instructed that I just write down my feelings and thoughts or when I notice a shift in mood (neutral to sad etc.) to write it down! List my external circumstances (what I'm doing, where, and with whom), and also list my internal circumstances (What was I thinking about, daydreaming, or remembering?). Then we can review it later together (if I'm comfortable, of course) and identify any patterns.

Journaling is proven to be an effective form of stress relief.
Suggesting that letting out our emotions through expressive writing will lead to a greater reduction in anxiety and depressive thoughts, or may reduce the amount of worrying we do, allowing us to sort out and clarify our thoughts and emotions, and let us reflect on our life's journey, by our looking back at past journal entries. It will give me time to reflect about my feelings and emotions so I can better understand them, providing an outlet for expressing difficult emotions ie: anger or frustration without hurting those I love. It could also be a way to release my negative thoughts and emotions so that I can move on to a happier state of mind. Basically I was to write whenever I "feel" like it. Just write whatever comes to mind. My hopes, fears, dreams, feelings, thoughts, ideas, frustrations, goals, ambitions, etc.

My counselor went on to discuss with me that a mood journal could ease my anxiety when I find myself in volatile situations or surroundings, or help me feel safe, that it could even reveal my accomplishments upon reflection, a way to gain insight into my thoughts and feelings, allowing me to dialogue with my psyche, especially the parts that seem frozen in time, allowing me to tap into deeper reserves of creativity and problem-solving, or I could get a flash of knowledge and awareness that haven't seen before! That sold me! Cha-ching! Sign me up, Mrs. Counselor!
Ultimately when one records their daily events and happenings, focusing on their reactions and perceptions to those events, forcing them "to-do", something! Sounded like a  good way to start coping with my depression! Quite possibly, the cheapest and most effective form of self-help, forcing me to be honest. Sharing my journal with my counselor or therapist will begin "real healing", by sharing my thoughts with her, I am accepting the idea that I can't do things alone. To get through my depression and trauma I NEED feedback! Which, in turn, will be beneficial for both my mental and physical health (studies show that it lowers blood pressure and can boost immune system, among other things) giving me an opportunity to nurture myself. Woohoo! I'm a nurturer or that sounded that bliss! Literally music to my hurting, ill, emotional, sad ears!
One of the handouts she gave me stated that writing about the significant people in my life, the peaks and valleys I have experienced through out my life, could give me give a sense of where I've been, am, and going. It also suggested for me to get comfortable, take a deep breath, write for 20 minutes without stopping. Envisioning myself and the beach (my relaxing, tranquil, favorite, happy place) will transport me to another time and place, removing me from my present anguish or grief, (or what I perceive to be grief. This is currently a "grey area" for me!) allowing me to distance myself from my life, taking me out of the context of everyday chaos! Yes! Loving it! Or I can choose to focus a 20 minute writing session on a specific problem or concern, that's reoccurring. Then detail what it is that worries or angers me, predict 3 different scenarios for what may happen next, list which one I like best and why? What role might I play in making each scenario come to pass?

I've also been jotting down Scriptures, phrases, quotes, etc. My first journal entry began on Saturday April 8, 2016. I've journaled every day since! It really is therapeutic! I can see it helping already. So I encourage any of you suffering from the debilitating disease of depression or anxiety to try this method of healing and restoration to health and happiness. I truly believe it is a journey. Please know I understand and I am here, so please message me if you ever need a listening ear. There is strength in numbers. Also, please seek a doctor, psychiatrist, therapist, or counselor, some type of professional trained in mental illness who can help you! It really is vital to your recovery to sanity. I tried for 8 years to do it on my own. I have been in counseling since March and I am already on a path to better coping, healing, and recovery. You can be too! It is never too late to start a new. Take it one day at a time. There is always hope. You WILL smile again!

Much love,
Dana

What are you Celebrating?

To do the bunny or not?

As a Christian I always feel somewhat judged critiqued when it comes to celebrating Christmas and Easter. And since this past Sunday was Easter Sunday, I thought I would share some research on Resurrection Day vs. Easter, my thoughts, and what our
 family has chosen to do.

Biblical View:

Resurrection Sunday, is a holiday celebrating the resurrection of JESUS CHRIST, from the dead, described in the New Testament as having occurred on the third day of HIS burial after HIS CRUCIFIXION by Romans at Calvary. It is the culmination of the PASSION of CHRIST, preceded by LENT, a forty-day period (not counting Sundays) of fasting, prayer, and penance in preparation for Easter, which begins on Ash Wednesday. The week before Easter, known as Holy Week, is VERY special in the Christian tradition. The Sunday before Easter is Palm Sunday.  Then Good Friday two days before Easter.

Palm Sunday and Good Friday respectively commemorate JESUS' entry in Jerusalem, the Last Supper and the CRUCIFIXION.

Bunnies, Baskets, Eggs, and all that Jazz:

The Easter Bunny is a folkloric figure and symbol of Easter, depicted as a rabbit bringing Easter eggs. Originating among German Lutherans, the Easter Hare originally played the role of a judge, evaluating whether children were good or disobedient in behavior. Similar to Santa. It came to the U.S. around the 18th Century.  In legend, the creature carries colored eggs in his basket, candy, and sometimes also toys to the homes of children.

he festival of Easter is laden with many traditions and customs. Easter Bunny, Easter eggs and Easter baskets have become hallmarks of this spring time festival. Easter gift basket is not simply an ensemble of various goodies and treats. Rather it brings home the meaning of Easter to all of us. There is more to these popular Easter ensemble than the eyes can see. So, let’s come together and observe the Easter Basket History and discover the essence of this spring time festival.

Since ages Easter baskets have played a pivotal role in the celebrations of Easter. As we all know, the season of spring has always been seen as a time of new life and renewal. And in the spring, it was customary to take baskets of early seedlings to the fertility goddess Eostre (or Oestre) to increase the chance of a good harvest. According to the legends, the fertility goddess Eostre (or Oestre) carried a basket of eggs. Thus, Easter baskets signify new life, rebirth and renewal. The Easter Basket ritual has its origins in the German folklore of the Easter Hare. According to a German legend, a white hare would leave Easter baskets filled with candies, brightly colored eggs and other goodies for kids to come and gorge on them on Easter morning.

The German settlers when moved to U.S., popularized the tradition of the Easter hare. And as the days passed, the Easter hare became the Easter bunny delighting the kids with baskets of eggs, chocolates, candy, jelly beans and other goodies on the Easter morning. Nowadays markets are flooded with a large range of Easter baskets to suit all tastes and preferences. In recent years, the popularity of Easter baskets has escalated tremendously. Gift basket brings multiple goodies together without much effort and the packaging is done in such a way as to present itself as a kind gift. Rather than having to shop for a variety of goodies or treats separately, the gift giver only has to compile them in Easter Baskets. Easter Gift Basket is easy and fun way to let people know how much they mean to you.

Easter eggs, in addition, Orthodox churches have a custom of abstaining from eggs during the fast of Lent. The only way to keep them from being wasted was to boil or roast them, and begin eating them to break the fast. As a special dish, they would probably have been decorated as part of the celebrations. Eggs boiled with some flowers change the colors, bringing Spring into the homes, and some over time added the custom of decorating the eggs. Some also use the color green, in honor of the new foliage emerging after the long-dead time of winter. Many Christians to this day typically dye their Easter eggs red, the color of blood, in recognition of the blood of the sacrificed CHRIST (and, of the renewal of life in springtime).  As such, for Christians, the Easter egg is a symbol of the empty tomb. The oldest tradition is to use dyed chicken eggs, but a modern custom is to substitute eggs made from chocolate, or plastic eggs filled with candy such as jellybeans.

The use of Easter baskets as we know them today, developed from more modern Christian symbols.  The fasting during Lent until Easter comes brought the tradition of fasting on a large meal. In earlier times the meal was brought in baskets to church to be blessed by priests.

I found most of these findings interesting in the fact that even what many consider "non-JESUS" centered Easter traditions, that many even say are pagan, in actuality have a church/Christian root.

If one thing I have discovered through my Christian walk, thus far, is that it IS a journey, a process, a renewing of the heart, soul, and mind. Once we become saved GOD will give us eyes to see and ears to hear what is RIGHTEOUS and good. HE will grow and mature us at varying times, degrees and lengths. Conviction comes, sin lessons, hopefully. Or at the vary least the recognition of sin and repentance. But like with everything, I believe it is about living a prayer-centered, obedient life, glorifying, serving, and honoring THE ALMIGHTY and balance. Leading a balanced, CHRIST-centered, faith-filled life. Joy and happiness too!

Also it is not our place to judge others. So if a Christian family decides to celebrate the Resurrection but also the Easter Bunny or other traditions, then who am I to judge? Same goes if they don't even acknowledge JESUS at all or celebrate any number of ways in between. Sometimes I feel like as Christians we have these unrealistic standards, beliefs, and expectations amongst how we view our fellow sisters and brothers. The BIBLE does say to love above all else. Do we really have to make another parent feel guilty because they allow their young kids to hunt  eggs or get a photo with the Easter Bunny????? Is that what JESUS would do??? Maybe we need more of WWJD and less of "what would I do"???

So for our Christian family we have decided to celebrate Resurrection Day and the Americanized, commercialized Easter both! It IS about Jesus first, fun, family, and sharing our own childhood memories with our crew. Sitting on the Easter Bunny's lap, coloring and hunting eggs, Easter baskets, sunrise service in new fancy, Easter duds, a big meal with extended family. Our new tradition of a Daddy Daughter Dance the weekend before.

BUT
JESUS
FIRST

Just because we decided to do both does not mean I do not hold the  Crucifixion and Resurrection deeply in my heart. It is sacred. Through HIS stripes I am healed, saved, and forgiven. I love JESUS so much! My faith is very important to me.
I have prayed about this and sought THE LORD'S guidance and direction. I am confident in our decision. GOD knows my heart and I believe that ultimately, that is HIS main concern with us all.

OUR
HEARTS

That our heart is right, receptive, and aligned with HIS WORD here on earth so one day our soul will be reunited with JESUS in HEAVEN.

Please comment and share your beliefs, views and traditions. I find it so interesting! I love learning other's traditions! I love getting new ideas for our family!
GOD bless!
XOXO

he festival of Easter is laden with many traditions and customs.
